Sugar Shack: A home for animal lovers

Lake Balzac, Wentworth township, Québec

The owners of this lakefront home had a simple wish list: a comfortable, casual place to gather with family on weekends and holidays. With 2 dogs, a couple of cats, and a semi-tame racoon – it was important that finishes be robust and designed to wear gracefully.

The exterior is inspired by nearby sugar shacks with their simple roof forms, steam venting cupolas, and weathered natural siding.

Ample glazing allows for views of the nearby lake and woods, along with passive solar heating. Extremely well insulated, utility bills are kept to a minimum, and the house can be heated by its high efficiency fireplaces in an emergency.

Inside, the various spaces offer open living and loft spaces, semi-private TV and music/family rooms, and private bedrooms and guest accommodations.
